Commander Orion, leading the Ghost Ops team on Aetheris, stayed alert in the Quantum Dreamweaver, monitoring the unfolding mission. His helmet’s display painted a vivid picture of his team’s movements, their forms outlined in red against the 3D map.

The tense atmosphere in the QD was noticeable as Jaxon kept a close eye on the progress of Anika and the two Earthling hackers. Linux and Falcon were both of Asian heritage—Linux's ancestors from China and Falcon's from Sri Lanka. They navigated the complex maze of the Crypt Tribe’s nucleus with precision, thanks to Anika’s expert hacking skills.

Suddenly, another part of the map caught Jaxon's attention. “Cindy, Mafdeti, report,” he called out through his helmet’s comm, noticing their signals had paused at an intersection.

“We’ve hit a barricade, Commander.” Cindy’s voice cracked in his ear. “Looks like a security measure we didn’t expect. It’s blocking our path.”

Jaxon swallowed the lump in his throat. “Mafdeti, can you use your elemental manipulation to bypass it?”

There was a brief pause before Mafdeti responded, “On it, Commander. It’s a complex system, but I think I can manipulate the air currents to trigger the sensors and open the path.”

Jaxon watched as their signals moved again, Mafdeti’s unique abilities coming to the fore.

His eyes looked heavenward. “Good work. Keep me updated.”

Meanwhile, Anika and the hackers reached the control centre, a vast room echoing with the hum of servers and terminals.

A colossal mainframe, its network of cables sprawling like a digital jungle, dominated the space. Metallic surfaces reflected the overhead holographic displays, showing analytics and feeds from the facility.

Control stations manned by Crypt Tribe operatives formed a semi-circle around the mainframe. Equipped with holographic instruments, touch controls, and virtual reality inputs, they hinted at advanced cyber warfare capabilities. Transparent screens along the walls offered panoramic views of Aetheris and the facility’s innards, underscoring the control centre’s role as the heart of the Crypt Tribe’s operations.

Jaxon watched Linux and Falcon attempt to breach the Crypt Tribe’s security system. The task was proving arduous. Although he could only see their red forms against the background, he imagined their expressions would be tense behind their helmets.

Falcon’s fingers paused over his keypad. “Commander, we’re facing an unexpected coding anomaly. It’s like a constantly shifting encryption algorithm. Every time we think we’ve cracked it, it changes.”

Linux said, “It’s adapting in real-time to our hacking attempts.”

Jaxon pressed his lips together as he assessed the situation. “Keep at it, but be cautious. We can’t afford to trigger any alarms.”

As the hackers redoubled their efforts, Jaxon maintained a vigil over the team’s progress. The holographic orb displayed a comprehensive view of the facility.

A heavily armed guard patrolled the perimeter of the circular room.

“What the hell, Commander,” Anika said. “Is that who I think it is?”

Anika faced Damien, their crew member and friend who had betrayed them once, and regretted it deeply. Jaxon had forgiven him, and Damien had proved his value as a crew member of the Manticore once more.

Jaxon bit the inside of his cheek as he watched through the camera in Anika’s helmet.
